Create Your Own Tab Stops in Word

Create your own Tab stops so you only have to press Tab once to get to where you want to be...

Use the ruler in the Print Layout view to add tab stops (if you don't see the rulers, go to View and make sure to turn them on).  By default there are Left Aligned tab stops every 0.5”.  This can work ok for some basics, but can be annoying if you need to tab over to the 4.5” location, or want to enter dollar values.

On the left margin up on the ruler you will see 3 little symbols.  These control indenting (that’ a whole other lesson!).  On the far left of the screen you will see what looks like a small bold L.  This represents a left-aligned tab.  If you click just below a position on the ruler, you will add a left-aligned tab stop yourself.  Click on the little L icon on the left margin to see the other types of tab stops you can insert.  A decimal tab is perfect for entering numbers as it lines them up neatly using the decimal as the centering position.
Go to Format on the Main Menu, Tabs to enter your tabs through the menu.

You can create totally new tab stops on different parts of your document.  If you are doing this after you have entered your text, make sure to select the lines you want to apply the tab stops to.
