Fashion Extraordinaire: EVOLUTION VINTAGE

**INTERVIEW @ VIZAGE MAGAZINE http://vizagemag.com/2010/06/10/303/**
Vizage: Tell us a little about Yourself!
EV: Wow! OK here it goes: Artist, Mother, Wife, Vegetarian, Step-Mother Extraordinaire, Right-Fighter, Truth Seeker, Vintage Lover, Bull Shit Detector, Entrepreneur, Boat Rocker, Feminist, Explorer, Self proclaimed Fashionista, Thinker, Friend, Stylist, Lover, University Graduate, Blogger, DREAMER, Owner: EVOLUTION VINTAGE. I’m a Canadian who has been living on the central Coast of California for the past 2 years. I left my home and family in the great white north to be with the love of my life and to start my next chapter: Family & Fashion.

Vizage: Define Evolution Vintage?

EV: Evolution Vintage is an on-line boutique offering our customers unique, hand selected Vintage clothing and accessories as well as Designer re-sale items both Vintage (pre-1989) and current.  EV wants to inspire women to push their fashion boundaries and explore new ways to style their current wardrobes. I want to bring a creative edge to the business of styling previously loved pieces from other eras (Vintage) with a woman’s contemporary wardrobe.  Let’s face it no one wears head-to-toe vintage (except maybe Dita Von Teese – and she rocks it!) and no one really should. I believe in taking an eclectic look at your personal style. Pair pieces from fashions past that you like and style them into your fashion future. Fashion has such a rich history, one that should be observed and respected. The Evolution Vintage woman chooses clothing and accessories because she LOVES them regardless of labels or time periods. She makes “Hollywood” or “New York” wherever she is ~ small town, big town, uptown, downtown! Her geographical location does not provide a boundary to her personal style esthetic. I always hear women say “I don’t have anywhere to wear this”, I say create somewhere in your mind, wear what makes you feel fabulous and GO FOR IT! Life and style is all about evolving, growing and changing. That IS what Evolution Vintage is all about; the evolution of one’s personal style and ideals.

Vizage: Are you a designer as well?

EV: YES. I am currently designing a line of vintage inspired hair accessories. Lots of colours, feathers and cage veils. They will be featured on my site www.evolution-vintage.com soon. Stay tuned!! I have always been a closeted Fashion Designer. Who knows what waits around the next corner pour moi?

Vizage: What does fashion mean to you?

EV: Fashion is an outward expression of feeling, mood and personality for me. I express myself through fashion. It is also a technically amazing art form.
Vizage: How would you define your city’s fashion?

EV: VERY casual. I live in an ocean side community in California. I live where the cities come to vacation. It’s all about layering here because of the off/on shore winds from the ocean. It is a community full of surfers as well so …. board shorts, flip-flops, t-shirts and hooded sweaters. Needless to say I stand out like the proverbial “sore thumb” but that’s just the way I like it. I like to rock the boat as far as style and fashion go no matter where I am or live; I wear sequins to the grocery store if the mood strikes me.
Vizage: Who are some of your favorite designers?

EV: Gianni Versace (pre 1997), Chanel (Co Co & Karl Lagerfeld), John Galliano (for Dior & his own label) and Alexander McQueen. I loved watching the Thierry Mugler shows from the 1990’s, walking art and theatrics.  There are so many talented designers who’s pieces I love. This was a tough question, like asking me what my favorite song is!!
Vizage: Where can readers buy your clothes/jewelry?

EV: All of the clothing and accessories are for sale through the on-line boutique at www.evolution-vintage.com We ship worldwide and have new items in our shop each week. I also have Vintage trunk shows/parties locally where my clients can come in person and look at the collection and have fun. I conduct styling demonstrations and discuss fashion. It is something fun and unique that I have the opportunity to do LIVE. I love the interaction with my clients.
Vizage: What are some of your fashion goals?

EV: My main goal is to inspire and provoke people with respect to their wardrobe and fashion boundaries. I would love to see more women think outside the regular confines of trend and go with their natural instinct and unique tastes. I want women to feel beautiful and proud of themselves and their fashion choices.  I would also like Evolution Vintage to become a great resource for stylists everywhere. I hope to become a full-time stylist and creative consultant to a fashion brand. I am forever creating and full of ideas.  I am enjoying my BLOG (www.evolutionvtg.blogspot.com) and will focus more on writing. I have started on-line but I have my sights set on publication and eventually becoming an author.  I am VERY ambitious and inspired person and it’s exciting to see where life will lead me.
Vizage: Where do you get your inspiration?

EV: I get my inspiration from everyone I meet, everything I hear and see. The world is full of inspiration and I usually find it in the most unexpected places. Women serve to inspire me the most. We are all so different, each having our own loads to bear.  I wish women would celebrate each other more and become allies not competitors. I also find much of my inspiration though music; after all music is the soundtrack of our lives.
Vizage: What are some of your favorite fashion websites, magazines, or books?

EV: I read Vogue and have a subscription to several other fashion magazines. I Have the entire collection of Gianni Versace coffee table books (Vanitas, Signatures, South Beach Stories, Rock and Royalty..etc There is a long list). A great resource book has been “Fashion – the century of the designer 1900-1999”  by Charlotte Seeling. I don’t really have a favorite but I have spend much time reading fashion related publications and books.  I look forward to the release in September of a new Co Co Chanel bio and I just enjoyed reading the book “Fabulosity: What it is and how to get it” by Kimora Lee Simmons. I think that is has a very positive message for women of any age or life circumstance. She and I have some similar philosophies regarding female empowerment.
Vizage: What other experience do you have in the fashion industry (stylist, retail, marketing, etc.)?
EV: I have been a student of fashion for 21 years, since I was 10 years old recording the fashion shows (runway shows & designer documentaries) and studying, and watching them. I used to raid my sister’s collection of Vogue magazines and spend my hours reading, studying and dreaming.  I have always loved fashion since I can remember and I have never stopped growing and learning. I have no “formal” training in fashion or design as my University degree is a general arts degree with a concentration in Psychology. However I do all the styling for Evolution Vintage and provide styling consultations now to private clients.  I hope to expand my styling and fashion repertoire and become a real PROfashional when I grow up! HA HA
Vizage: What advice can you give to our readers in today’s world regarding fashion?
EV: I would say be yourself and follow your natural instincts with fashion. It is such a subjective and individual experience, like art. There are always things to learn but trusting your instincts is very important in anything you do. Be brave and bold, try something new and always evolve your style. You have to try something new, make mistakes and grow with respect to fashion/style as you would in life. Lastly, have fun, smile and enjoy yourself! The positivity and confidence that you exude to the world is the most fabulous and fashionable thing of all, something that will never go out of style!
