Iridology: The Window to Your Health

We are all familiar with the English proverb “the eyes are the window of the soul”, but have you ever considered that they are also the window to your physical health? For an Iridologist this statement is too true. Iridology is the science and practice of studying the nerves in the eye to assess how it correlates to nutritional weaknesses in the body. This is a holistic approach to health that reveals the body’s constitution and the levels of health and transition that takes place in the body.  When an Iridology practitioner sees weak tissue in the iris, he/she is also witnessing nutritional imbalance. And this opens up a window of opportunity, so to speak, for a practitioner to help one to strengthen that tissue and provide guidance for practices of proper nutritional health.

What is the history of Iridology?

Iridology was first realized in the most primitive form in the early 1900’s. A young boy named Ignatz von Peczley of Hungary caught an owl, and in the struggle with the frightened bird he accidentally broke the owl’s leg. As the two glared into each other’s eyes Ignatz observed a black stripe rising in the bird’s eye. He then bandaged the bird’s leg and nursed it back to health before eventually freeing it. But the bird lingered in the boy’s garden for several years and Ignatz discovered the appearance of white and crooked lines where the black stripe first appeared. This black stripe eventually became a tiny, black spot, surrounded by white lines and shading. Later in years, Ignatz became a doctor, and remembering the experience with the owl, he observed irises of patients in the surgical wards where he practiced. This study of the development in the eyes coinciding with injuries, surgery or illness convinced the doctor that there was a reflex relationship between the individual markings in the iris and the rest of the body. At the same time a Reverend Niels Liljequist, from Sweden was determining that a relationship existed between various drug settlements and definite discolourations in the iris. Since then iridology has progressed greatly. Numerous doctors and scientists have researched Iridology and revised and enlarged the iris chart that was first developed by Dr. Peczley. This chart has become a valuable tool for Iridology practitioners today.

How does Iridology work?

The practice of Iridology usually takes place in a private clinic. The Iridologist uses a hand held magnifier to view each iris, looking for particular colours and markings on the eye. These colours and marks indicate tissue weaknesses which correlate to the physical body via an Iridology map. The map charts out exactly which organs, systems, and limbs require attention. The depth of the tissue markings indicates the level of nutritional deficiency from sub acute to degenerative. Once a practitioner has completed a full assessment and has a health history of the client, then they can begin a counseling process to provide instruction for improving the client’s physical condition. An iridologist will usually give advice of a naturopathic process suggesting changes in diet and/or prescribe vitamins, herbal or homeopathic remedies as a course of action.  The entire process takes between one to one and a half hours to complete.

What is most commonly seen in the iris?

For many who seek the advice of an Iridologist their biggest complaints range from fatigue, weight gain, and digestive disturbances to severe headaches, dizziness or extreme pain. An iridologist is usually looking for signs of a particular system being out of balance. Using both the left and the right iris a practitioner is able to see the shape and condition of the colon and stomach. If there is a stricture, spasticity or prolapse of the colon or poor absorption of nutrients in the stomach it can be seen and addressed with sound holistic advice. All of these conditions can cause a toxicity build up in the digestive system and disturb many other systems in the body. A clean colon equals clean blood, organs and skin and vice versa. Just as important as the digestive system is the nervous system. An Iridologist looks for particular colour, shape and thickness of the nerve ring to indicate trouble. A stressed nervous system can create digestive upset; disturb sleep patterns and circulation issues amongst several other health problems.  The glandular system and the hormones they produce can be a source of problems for those suffering with fatigue, irritability, weight gain, and difficulty losing weight. Inflammation is also witnessed in the iris and can be the cause of chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, bloating, and digestive disturbances. This can also indicate the source of infection in the body. And most importantly, an iridologist wants to look at the body’s constitution. A person with a strong constitution will be rarely sick, and if when he/she is ill would bounce back very quickly. This tells an iridologist that this person can safely cleanse or make dramatic changes to their diet and exercise program, and heal very quickly. Someone with a weak constitution is often feeling under the weather and can take a much longer time to recover. This tells a practitioner that this person requires a slow process of building the body back up with vitamins and minerals and make smaller adjustment to their diet and exercise regime. They will take much longer to heal.

As an Iridologist, myself who has been practicing for the past ten years, I can say that I have never seen two sets of eyes that are exactly the same. Every eye is different and every eye tells me a unique story about someone’s lifestyle and their particular challenges with their health. I am fascinated still, by what I can pick out in an iris. And I am pleased when I have assessed a client, they exit my clinic with a program to follow and then return for follow up one month later with a success story.  Not everyone’s health issues are healed in one month, but when one sees results very quickly, they are more likely to become more aware and educated about what it is that they need to do to continue their journey towards full health.  Consider having an iridology assessment done today. That quick peak in your window may be the health picture that provides you with information that gets you started on a path of healthier living.
